Five Steps To Safety Success
Leadership
In every aspect of organizational life, leaders determine what gets done and how. Sustainable improvement in safety requires that leaders at all levels create a strong organizational culture for safety excellence.
Organizational Culture
Culture represents the shared values and beliefs that drive behavior in an organization. It is commonly characterized as “the way we do things around here.” Leaders constantly shape culture by their decisions, priorities and approach to problem solving.
Safety Enabling Systems
Enabling systems are basic safety mechanisms that ensure adequate safety functioning. Though classified by different organizations in different ways, they generally include hazard recognition and mitigation, training, regulations, procedures and policies.
Sustaining Systems
Organizational sustaining systems maintain and assure the effectiveness of safety enabling systems. Typically, they include selection and development activities, performance management, organizational structure, employee engagement and other management systems.
Working Interface
The working interface is where employees interact with the organization’s technology to get the work done. It is where exposures to hazard exist or could exist as a consequence of the combination of equipment, facilities, systems, and employee actions.
